What is Solana? SOL Explained for Beginners 2026

What is Solana?

Solana is a high-performance blockchain designed for fast, cheap transactions. Launched in 2020, it can process over 65,000 transactions per second (TPS) — compared to Ethereum's ~15 TPS. This speed makes Solana popular for NFTs, DeFi, and payment applications.

How Solana Works

Solana uses two key innovations to achieve its speed:

  • Proof of History (PoH): A cryptographic clock that timestamps transactions before consensus, eliminating the bottleneck of validators waiting to agree on time
  • Proof of Stake (PoS): Validators stake SOL to participate in block production. PoH and PoS work together to achieve both speed and security

Transaction fees average $0.00025 — a fraction of a cent. Ethereum fees can be $5-100+ during peak congestion.

Solana vs Ethereum

Feature Solana Ethereum
TPS 65,000+ 15-30
Avg Fee $0.00025 $1-50+
Consensus PoH + PoS PoS
Uptime History Several outages Near 100%

Solana Ecosystem

Solana hosts a rich ecosystem:

  • DeFi: Raydium, Orca, Jupiter (DEX aggregator) — billions in TVL
  • NFTs: Magic Eden marketplace, Mad Lads, DeGods collections
  • Payments: Solana Pay — USDC payments at zero fees
  • Memcoins: Solana's fast, cheap transactions make it the home of meme coin trading

SOL Price History

SOL launched at ~$0.95 in 2020. It peaked at ~$260 in November 2021, crashed to $8 in 2022 (FTX collapse hurt sentiment — FTX/Alameda held large SOL positions), and recovered strongly to $100-200+ in the 2024-2026 bull cycle.

Is Solana a Good Investment?

Solana has proven its technology works at scale and has a growing developer community. Key risks: past network outages, reliance on a small validator set compared to Ethereum, and ongoing competition from other L1s. Compare current SOL price on our Solana price page.
