What is the Crypto Fear & Greed Index?
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a daily sentiment indicator that measures the emotions driving the cryptocurrency market. It ranges from 0 (Extreme Fear) to 100 (Extreme Greed).
How is it Calculated?
The index analyzes multiple data sources:
- Volatility (25%) — Unusual price swings signal fear
- Market Momentum & Volume (25%) — High buying volume signals greed
- Social Media (15%) — Sentiment analysis of crypto discussions
- Surveys (15%) — Polling the crypto community
- Bitcoin Dominance (10%) — Rising BTC dominance suggests fear (flight to safety)
- Google Trends (10%) — Search volume for crypto-related terms
How to Use It for Trading
Warren Buffett famously said: "Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful." This principle applies to crypto:
- Extreme Fear (0-25) — The market is oversold. Historically, this has been a good time to accumulate. See our buying the dip guide.
- Fear (26-45) — Caution prevails, but opportunities may exist for dollar cost averaging.
- Neutral (46-55) — Market is indecisive. Watch for breakout signals.
- Greed (56-75) — Bullish sentiment is building. Consider taking some profits.
- Extreme Greed (76-100) — Market may be overheated. High risk of correction.
Fear & Greed vs. Bitcoin Price
Historically, extreme fear has preceded major rallies, while extreme greed often signals local tops. However, the index is not a timing tool — extreme fear can persist for weeks during bear markets. Use it alongside other analysis like our coin screener and market heatmap.
