What is Binance Coin (BNB)?
BNB is the native cryptocurrency of the Binance ecosystem — the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. Originally an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, BNB now powers two blockchains: BNB Chain (formerly BSC) and BNB Beacon Chain.
What Can You Do With BNB?
- Trading fee discounts: Pay fees in BNB on Binance for a 25% discount
- BNB Chain (formerly BSC): BNB is the gas token for all transactions on BNB Chain — the Ethereum-compatible chain used by PancakeSwap and thousands of DeFi apps
- Binance Launchpad: Participate in token sales and IEOs using BNB
- Staking: Stake BNB on Binance for yield, or delegate to validators on BNB Chain
- Payment: Accepted by many merchants via Binance Pay
- NFTs: Used on Binance NFT Marketplace
BNB Burn Mechanism
Binance began with 200 million BNB. Through a quarterly burn program, Binance destroys BNB using 20% of profits until 100 million BNB (50%) are burned. This deflationary mechanism is similar to a stock buyback — reducing supply should support price over time, assuming demand holds.
Additionally, BNB Chain burns a portion of transaction fees with each block, adding continuous deflationary pressure.
BNB Chain (Formerly Binance Smart Chain)
BNB Chain is an Ethereum-compatible blockchain offering:
- ~3 second block times
- Fees of fractions of a cent (vs Ethereum's dollars)
- EVM compatibility — Ethereum apps can deploy with minimal changes
- PancakeSwap (the largest DEX on BNB Chain) processes billions in daily volume
Trade-off: BNB Chain uses only 21 validators, making it significantly more centralized than Ethereum's 500,000+ validators.
BNB Price History
BNB launched at ~$0.10 in 2017. Its price milestones:
- 2018: $25 peak during bull run
- 2021: ~$700 all-time high
- 2022: Crashed to ~$180 following market-wide downturn and Terra/FTX collapses
- 2024-2026: Recovered to $400-800+ range
Is BNB a Good Investment?
BNB is deeply tied to Binance's success. Risks include regulatory pressure on centralized exchanges, competition from other chains, and dependence on a single company. Upside: Binance remains the dominant exchange and BNB's ecosystem is large and active.
