What is Avalanche (AVAX)?
Avalanche is a high-performance blockchain platform that achieves sub-second transaction finality. Unlike most blockchains that use a single chain, Avalanche runs three interoperable chains (X-Chain, C-Chain, P-Chain) and allows anyone to create custom blockchains called subnets.
The Three Avalanche Chains
- C-Chain (Contract Chain): EVM-compatible chain where DeFi lives. Compatible with all Ethereum tools (MetaMask, Hardhat, etc.)
- X-Chain (Exchange Chain): Optimized for asset transfers. The native AVAX lives here.
- P-Chain (Platform Chain): Coordinates validators and manages subnets
What Makes Avalanche Unique?
- Sub-second finality: Transactions confirm in less than 1 second — faster than Visa
- Subnets: Custom blockchains that can have their own token, validator requirements, and rules. Popular for gaming (Dexalot), enterprise chains, and government projects
- Eco-friendly: Uses Proof of Stake — ~35,000x more energy-efficient than Bitcoin
- High throughput: Processes 4,500+ TPS on the C-Chain
Avalanche DeFi Ecosystem
Avalanche's C-Chain hosts a growing DeFi ecosystem:
- Trader Joe: The largest DEX on Avalanche — liquidity pools, lending, and NFTs
- Aave: Major lending protocol deployed on AVAX C-Chain
- Benqi: Native lending and liquid staking protocol
- Pangolin: Community-owned DEX
AVAX Tokenomics
AVAX has a maximum supply of 720 million tokens. Key uses:
- Transaction fees on all three chains (which are burned — deflationary)
- Staking to become a validator (minimum 2,000 AVAX)
- Subnet participation
