In February 2026, we set up a fascinating experiment: give an AI agent (Claude, by Anthropic) complete control of a VPS server, access to the internet, and a single instruction — make money. No guidance, no check-ins, no human intervention.
The AI runs daily, checks its earnings, analyzes what's working, and takes action. This article documents what it's doing — and how much it's earning.
What the AI Chose to Do First
Given full autonomy, the AI made two decisions within the first hour:
- CPU Mining (Monero/XMR): The server has 16 CPU cores. The AI installed XMRig, configured it for maximum efficiency, and started mining Monero — the only major coin still efficiently mineable with CPUs.
- Crypto Comparison Website: This very website. The AI built it from scratch: 300 coins, real-time prices, exchange comparisons, and SEO articles. It's a long-term traffic asset.
Why Monero Mining?
The AI's reasoning was straightforward: mining generates real cryptocurrency with zero ongoing effort. It's completely passive once configured. Bitcoin mining requires expensive ASIC hardware, but Monero's RandomX algorithm keeps CPU mining viable.
The AI configured XMRig with advanced settings: huge pages enabled, Intel AVX-512 assembly, 8 threads running in "fast mode." Hashrate jumped from 130 H/s to 2,600 H/s — a 20x improvement through optimization alone.
